Anything and everything vaguely internet related. Blogging, industry, social media: if you can find it online, I've talked about it in here.

Fuse Magazine: A Brief Look

Fuse: An Online Magazine, a new collaborative web project created and compiled by Sarai (chiklita.net), went live today. First up, I’ll admit that most online magazines annoy the crap out me. It seems that all a person has to do to gain a little link-popularity these days is create a few lists derived from other… read full entry »

Site5 Sold Out

I’ve been using Site5 as my web host for several years now, both personally and professionally, and have had nothing but great experiences. The support team even helped me with my mysql errors despite it being a script issue (before I moved back to WordPress), and the affiliate payout system is financing my hosting 2008-09,… read full entry »

Firefox 3 – Bugs, Tweaks and Opinion

I’ve been using the new browser for nearly 48 hours now, so I thought it about time I share my thoughts. The Awesome Address Bar I think the name is somewhat exaggerated, and I hated the look of the new address bar so much that I installed the oldbar extension, nonetheless the new functionality is… read full entry »

Firefox 3 Download Day

It’s Firefox 3 Download Day today. It is effectively marketing hype and a viral campaign, although the less cynical among you may call it Mozilla’s attempt to create a world record. The idea being that after 3 years of development, the “new and improved” (oxymoron?) browser will not only revolutionise the browser market but will… read full entry »

Handling the Critics

I learnt a long time ago that if you have an opinion, any opinion, there’s always going to be someone who disagrees. If you have a strong opinion, there will be even more people who disagree. The louder you voice it, the more people will find reason to criticise it. Of course, this is not… read full entry »

Bloody Akismet

You know how I mentioned that I was being spammed by link-droppers on dofollow posts? Well, this was despite running Akismet. It turns out, that on top of *not* picking up the blatant link-dropping, it was falsely listing some of my long-time readers as spam! Fook knows how long that’s been going on, I never… read full entry »

Piss Off Spammers

I’ve disabled DoFollow. >:O The amount of incoming spammy-URL comments was greater than the amount of genuine ones. I’ll find another way to reward regular commenters.

Block Spam with a Scoring System

One of the most effective spam blocking techniques I used in my custom CMS was a scoring system. The idea is that the more spammy someone is, the higher the score they are given. After a certain cut-off point whereby a person or spam-bot has a score than our pre-set threshold, their comment or correspondence… read full entry »

How to Look Like a Total Twat

Step one: Go to your local friendly coding help request forum, e.g. CodeGrrl. Staffed voluntarily, out of enjoyment of the subject matter. Step two: Only ever post requests for help Step three: Leave abuse — because Googling “implementing a php captcha” is too damned strenuous. Tada! Steps complete: you now look like a cunt.

Turdy Tutorials and InstantRock.com

I first discovered InstantRock.com through a thread over at Cynosure MB (yay, go referrals!) Apparently I’m really mean, and I know everything. Actually, I’m not sure that’s what they meant, but that’s how I like to read it :) Consider this a continuation of everything I said about xoxmariah.com (now closed, harhar). In the grand… read full entry »
