Battle of the CMS

Amelie, her partner, and Katy came for a little “wii party” yesterday, as a belated birthday celebration. The wii part was fun, and Amelie bought me Super Mario Galaxy which was totally uber (and mucho unexpected!) However, the part of the evening that got me most fired up was not plungering rabbids in Rayman, or doing the hula with a giant donut for Wario.. no, it was the inevitable geeky “let’s compare CMS admin panels”.

Turn’s out, Amelie’s CMS has all sorts of nifty features, and it looks posh, and it has settings and options and things. Reminiscent of an early WordPress install (but totally hand-coded, we’re told) it does all of the things that a CMS/blog should. Katy too has features in hers, with moderation and tick boxes and shiny stuff. All very neat and tidy. What does mine have?

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: admin_lookup()

Bah! Maybe it’s time I finally got off my arse and re-coded my blog. :(

I don’t remember doing the hula with a giant donut… That’s in Wario’s Smooth Moves.. or whatever it’s called ;D I clarified the wording of my entry so it makes more sense.

  3. My CMS is pretty much an early WP but without bloat :P And yes it is completely hand coded. I can even send you the files so you can seeeee. But I won’t, because you’ll totally steal it and stuff >:P The only thing I “stole” from WP is the auto p thing – for formattinz and stuff. But that’s available on Matt’s site so yah. There are a few features that are far too much like WP for my liking though, must rewrite those… Like password protection, do not want. Or need. I want to do something more like what Katy has for “protected” posts. Hmmm. My CMS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> yours.

  4. XD I think making a cool CMS admin panel is harder to do than write the actual CMS! I don’t think I’m ever going to get around to even try and write my own CMS, but I kinda have one for my graphics xD

  5. Who knows, maybe a new admin panel will inspire you to blog more or something… I don’t know. I’m good at making admin panels. It’s just the back-end stuff that I’m not so good with. *must try harder*

  6. HAHA. :P I lub you even more after that. But you still smell. Kinda. Ya’ll should take screenshots of these things. :3

  7. That is great :)

  8. Hahaha! That sounds like an ace party! And I’m being serious, my Saturday night was spent in a dingy hell hole of a nightclub surrounded by some of the most undesirable characters in North Wales :(

  9. I wish I had friends to be geeky with. My life is so sad, because my friends pretend they’re so cool. :(

  10. lol, that’s what i done for 7 hours straight yesterday, recoded the whole blog (coding and the mark-up/CSS), and tonight its the admin panel. Except well I was really pleased with finally getting a new one up after 2 months of the old “ugly” version. I also had to redo the whole comment system and the databases, I’m not sure if i should recover the old posts and comments or not, more thank likely not :s I have never styles my admin panel, but hey i may start now.

  11. I’d kill to be able to hand-code my own CMS… :/

  12. No, you should just stop being lazy and recode *my* blog. Jeez, what a laze… Man, I tried playing Galaxy and thought it was gorgeous, but it still gave me motion sickness. *sticks to the Paper Mario series*

  13. I would be happy if I just understood how to code the blasted thing in the first place, lol. You are so lucky to have a Wii. I wanted one, but with my seizures I felt that it would be better not to have one. I could just see me standing up playing baseball or something and get a seizure and who knows where that ball would go, lol.

  14. Blog should come with warning: DO NOT HAVE COFFEE IN MOUTH DURING READING. X3 I’m sorry, but when you told us what your blog said, I damn near lost it. Ahh, Jem, be happy that at least you CAN hand-code your CMS. ;) Also, congrats on the awesome wii game! Still waiting to get my Wii…Mom promises that it’ll be for my birthday (or at least she’s going to give me some of the money). Pfft…durn high priced contraptions that cause access amounts of fun…and yelling….and possibly tossing of the wiimote be it on purpose or not.

  15. That’d be cool. But as long as your blog works for us readers, eh?

  16. tickboxes are hardcore. none of this “type ‘yes’ or ‘no’ in the textbox” nonsense :P

  17. For once in your e-life, you phail? Jem, this is a momentous occasion!

You’d think so, wouldn’t you Amanda.. except it’s only taken me about 3 hours to get my admin panel up to a semi-decent level of usability. w00t.

  19. Are you going to show it to us when you finish it? :O

  20. Heheh or like my admin panels it’s half finished and the functionality isn’t far behind. What stood out to me is that all of you compared features etc yet didn’t decide then and there to create some sort of UBER CMS, by which you combine all the features you like into a mundo package of goodness. I’ve always wanted to use my auto-scaffolding class as i think the benefits of it are tremendous but I can’t be bothered with the tediousness of building a cms ontop of it just so that i can show it off in all its glory. Perhaps it can be of some use. Up for another collaborative project?

  21. You guys should all take screenshots of your hand-coded CMS admin panels. They sound really spiffy. I can never get any of my systems past half-done. :P

  22. Super Mario Galaxy is awesome, and so is Wario! I love that donut hula thing, haha.

  23. HAHAHAHA. :P Err, oops. Shouldn’t be laughing. Don’t worry dear. -pats- You still rock. (:

  24. Ah yes… making a script for oneself is much harder than making one for a client. You can’t blame someone else for not giving you enough data =P … and deadlines are considerably more lax. But then… don’t worry, chances are that you’ll be the only one to see said admin panel. So you can happily bask in the knowledge that you don’t actually NEED all that ;) … of course, you could also be smart and not take my advice and make a better script =P

  25. OMG Fatal error! *runs and hides*

  26. Jem has fatal errors? *surprised* I’m sure the PHP ninja would be the only one to see it anyways XD I know I won’t :P

  27. I too love me some Super Mario Galaxy.

  28. I miss your ninja. :(

  29. Omg your site is well good! Totally better than mine! Lol ultimately better than me totally! Keep this up =] btw i bought Super Mario Galaxy it’s ace! I love it

  30. I’ve never bothered with admin panel cosmetics. I’m notoriously lazy, and school (now college) consumed a lot of the time in which I would normally use in order to fashion a half-decent Admin CP. Personally, a quick cookies-based login with an article manager with a crappy design composed of tables was sufficient for me… all user-management was done via the lovely phpMyAdmin. When designing an admin CP for others, I’d often keep the same design as the site, with a lil’ sidebar and $_GET string includes. Does the job. Perhaps I should try and become more of a perfectionist.

  31. :O *drool* Give us some screenshots :D (I want the fatal error one)
