New Site Review

For the first time in about a year, I’ve had a new review done by Rhiannon of PetShopGirl’s Reviews. Have a read, it’s good! Feel free to expand on any ideas that have been suggested. I wouldn’t mind some suggestions for other reviewers/reviewing websites too — it’s been ages since I’ve had site reviews done.

Oh, and I need to re-learn everything I taught myself about Macs last summer. If any of you Mac users have some hot tips, let me know before August 29th. I’ll be on a Mac at work and have only worked with them for a few months before.

Edit (18th August): If you’ve been trying to comment and have been having difficulty, please feel free to try again. It turns out I had the word “apples” blocked because of some fruit-related spam I got a few months ago, and this was obviously getting in the way of anyone who mentioned the Apple company!

  1. Aw I love reading the reviews you get! Yay! We just got an iMac, and it is easy to understand, but it in the beginning it is a little har to learn the new ways to do things. JEM: I’m writing a guestbook script that uses a MySQL database, and I used your tutorial at tutorialtastic about creating a secure login page. Is it ok if I give you credit in the readme-file and if I comment it in the file?

  2. Make sure you download and use Quicksilver on your Mac. It’ll entirely change the way you use your computer. Quicksilver = love, seriously.

  3. Any particular kind of tips you’re looking for? I am a Mac girl – my two home computers are Macs (iBook and iMac), so I know enough about them. ;) Were you looking for tips on programs, or just in general or something? I know you’re not technically a switcher, but the below articles all focus on tips for people going from Windows to Mac – hope they’re of some use. :) http://the.taoofmac.com/space/HOWTO/Switch%20To%20The%20Mac (check from Best Practices onwards) http://hyperreality.wordpress.com/2006/07/17/10-tips-for-new-mac-users-switching-from-windows/

  4. I use Macs at uni. Safari > Firefox – Firefox for Mac looks… wrong. And weird. Oh, and you don’t have right mouse buttons, so you have to do a CTRL click for the context menu. But seriously: the dock = LOVELOVELOVE. I got a Windows version, but it wasn’t quite the same and made everything slow so I got rid of it. Ah, and there’s no Notepad so make sure you get yourself a nice text editor. We have BBEdit but I think you have to pay for that.

  5. Oh, Macs! Only been using mine for a few months, but deeply in love. For a good text editor, I like Smultron, which is free. It might have functions you don’t need/like, like colour coding, but that can be switched off (and I love the tabs! Notepad annoys me greatly, since you can only have one document open at a time, unless you want to have five different Notepads open.) CTRL+Click for the context menu annoyed me in the beginning. I hate Safari personally, so I kept Firefox. I’ve had problems finding a good FTP program, though – Cyberduck has the bad habit of crashing constantly, which a Mac user shouldn’t have to deal with as much, I have learnt… well, the new version seems more stable though, but still. Warning for Cyberduck!

  6. That is one detailed review! I might get my site reviewd there eventually. It’s been years since I’ve actually used a Mac. One thing I remember is that you should put all the programs you frequently use onto the doc, and make the doc not disappear.

  7. Anna: We have Fetch at uni – works well. Don’t know if it’s free or not, but it’s a good little application with a cute icon if nothing else XD

  8. I love my iBook. For my editor, I use a program called TextWrangler. http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/ Hope that helps!

  9. We use Fugu as an SFTP client. It’s free and has a funny fish icon, :D

  10. Hooray for macs, the love of my life :) :) :) I can’t really think of any cool tips offhand. cmd-down (arrow button) = open file/folder, which is different from windows, I think (you just press enter in windows, right?)

  11. You are likely to know this already Jem since you have Ubuntu at home but Bluefish runs on a Mac as well. I haven’t tried it personally on a Mac, but I just love Bluefish. It’s a wonderful editor. May-be you can talk your work into replacing Dreamweaver with it.

  12. I have a friend who just bought an extremely expensive laptop from Apple… thing cost about $2,500! He won’t stop talking about it and how wonderful it is. And here I am, a devout PC-lover, plodding along with my Windows… *lol*

  13. I know absolutely nothing of Macs… so can’t help you there. As for PSGR… well let’s put it like this “I told you so” :) Yet you were very keen on you opinion. I have to admit I was taken aback when I saw you on the waiting list there, a week ago.

  14. Amelie: Macs do have right-click. It just depends on what mouse you have. ;) Older Apple standard mice don’t have them, no, but the newer ones do, and all USB Windows mice work on Macs as well. :) And for webdesign, I use Transmit for FTP and skEdit for any coding. Both rock! http://www.panic.com/transmit/ http://www.skti.org/skEdit.php

  15. I use Macs at school. Because from seventh grade onward, Macs are ‘all the rage’ with teachers. They hate Windows and have never heard of Linux. Oh, but I wish that there was right-click mice at school. And actually, I’ve always found Windows incredibly easy to understand. Mac’s are pretty easy to understand, too, though.

  16. I looove mine, they’re pretty slick. I don’t think they’re too different really, I use both and it’s never been a problem.

  17. Fruit spam? Ooh, healthy. :D
