My Life, On a Bookshelf

I was in the bedroom thinking again last night (anyone spot a trend here?) and came to the conclusion that my bookcase, the one that Karl went out and bought in August, perfectly represents my life. How sad is that, eh? My life can be ‘explained’ within three shelves.

First, there’s the bottom shelf:

bottom shelf

There’s a cup that has no doubt had coffee in it at some point (that’s instant coffee, don’t forget) but is now home to 4 new civilisations of the green and furry variety. A bunch of web design books that I bought after reading everything I needed to know on the Internet (yeah, no logic there, I tell ya) and should probably re-sell because they cost me a fortune and haven’t served any purpose yet. Mind you, the Zen Garden book isn’t bad — it means I don’t have to go online to see the pretty designs. So, coffee + geek.

Shelf number two, the middle one:

Aw, look, cute cuddly teddies. I’m sure most of you wouldn’t believe me if I told you I owned millions of the bloody things and Karl bought most of them (it required begging). I was even tempted to put a section on my website for them once.. I decided it might ruin my reputation. Oh, and yes, that’s about 30 Terry Pratchett books behind ’em. So, we have so far: coffee + geek + teddies + pratchett.

Lastly, the top shelf:

A crocheted half-finished blanket for my nephew and yet another Harry Potter book that I’ve not read. That’s it really. Coffee + geek + teddies + pratchett + crochet + unfinished books. Y’know, I always thought there was more to me than that. Should I be sad or relieved that I’m not one of these complex females?

(Unrelated: no, I’ve not decided on what to do with RY yet, and I’m really appreciative of all the plugs tutorialtastic got. Thank you!)

  1. love it :) what’s up with terry pratchet? I think I must have read at least one of his books, but whenever someone says the name, my ears get all excited, because it sounds SO familiar.

TERRY PRATCHETT IS THE BEST!!!!! *cough*

  3. I really must see if I can get my hands on a Terry Pratchett book and start reading. :P

  4. *is very jealous of your Pratchett books* Mine are all the crappy mass-market paperbacks, most of which I bought used. I’m such a dork about having the original covers for books…

  5. I’m envying your Web design books. I’ve got Meyer and Zeldman, but not the others. (Lots of Pratchetts, though.)

  6. Hey, I have that same Zeldman book! My parents got it for me for Christmas this year. My mom said, “Yeah, I opened it and tried reading a page, but none of it made any sense to me. I figured you’d like it.” I mean, it was on my wishlist, but still. Funny. Your cover of the HP book looks so different from the ones here. It’s all dark and moody. Also, I am jealous of your crocheting skills. Over Xmas break I tried to make a square, but instead it came out as a trapezoid because I kept dropping stitches every time I turned to go back the other direction. I’d like to (re)learn to knit, because I want to make a Gryffindor scarf for myself. Yes, I am a dork. :P

  7. I have a gift voucher to spend, and seeing as I bought all my books for my couse all ready, I decided that I might buy the Zen Garden book, or another book that might give me workable ideas with css. Can anyone recommend one? If I took a picture to represent myself it would be: Empty cans of larger + empty/mouldy cups of tea + dirty clothes + junk all over the floor = Carly ….

  8. That’s awesome: bookcases tell much about their owners. More than a nightstand or a bed could (unless you are a sex fetish, than maybe not). It makes me want to go home and look at my bookcases there. My Uni bookcase doesn’t say much about me except I don’t like to dust and I use my printer too much… Ah, lucky! Brits get a nice copy of HP. I’m stuck with the silly American children’s cover. It’s so cheesy. :( And have fun with the crocheting! I like the shade of blue you picked out!

  9. Figures. UK HP covers are so much better than US ones. We get the happy mystic “ooh, look I’m green/blue/red glowy!! Exciting! And Having FUN!!” You guys actually get ones that might have something to do with the book. ;P Figures, you write a post about how your shelves describe you, and I rant about a book cover. I should work in a library. ;P

  10. I wish I had those web standards / web whatever books. Or actually, the css zen garden one. I’ll never get anything I ever want. My parents like make it a rule or something.

  11. woohooo Neil Gaiman :) He’s my GOD ;)

  12. I really must see if I can get my hands on a Terry Pratchett book and start reading. :P

  13. Sorry about that double comment. o.O I think it was sessionsaver. Mm.

  14. Hahaha; Coffee and alot of books, same here; Im just not really huge HP fun or even Pratchett one. But aye I have a shell of fantasy book too and some other stuff. Tbh your shels look like the combination of what my house mate and i have :) she is crocheting one =P im just jelouse of you two being able to do that O.o

  15. oooh! I’m definitely stealing your plusihies coding books and discworld novels. As for the coding books I fully get it. I own a really thick one (about 10 cm thick A4 in format) book on DHTML and CSS, yet I’ve only read about 30 pages on CSS >

  16. I don’t have a bookshelf like Jem..but if I did, it’d be full of Windows XT/2000/XP reference books, networking and cisco books, car repair manuals, and the odd Douglas Adams and Tom Sharpe book. I’ve also uncovered my old handbook for Turbo Pascal 5..:)

  17. zOMG YOU HAVE A BILLIE BUNNY (the pink rabbit thing). I have one too :D At first I thought she was a little bit ugly but I like her now. YAY she’s sat on the windowsill just in my line of sight as I look up. Hee! You know, I think you invaded my dreams last night o__O I dreamt I’d made a site that wasn’t valid and you were shouting about how it wasn’t good enough :P You had blonde hair though. Weird. /randomness

  18. Oh and PS: I have 92374928375938275 cuddly toys. Considerably more than yoooooowwwwwwwww. :P

  19. Jem with Blonde hair…hmm…

    Don’t get any ideas. :P

  21. I only have 9 Terry Pratchet books! I hang my head in shame now. ;P

  22. I always hear about this Terry Pratchett… I really should pick up a book of his or something to see what all the rave is about! As for those of you who think the US versions of the HP covers are ridiculously childish – you should see the German version ones! I’d love to analzse my bookshelf, but I don’t quite have enough on it for it to really say anything relevant about who I am. But I’ll just have you know that there are bananas on mine because I didn’t feel like putting them anywhere else when I came back from the store :D

  23. very interesting post ^^ i wish i could crochet u look v gd at it ^^ purdy blankie

  24. I don’t need to analyze myself or my possessions because I already know the answer – you can chuck my life into a pit and unload into it grounded feces and I wouldn’t be able to detect the difference.

  25. I didn’t read pratchett much before I met Jem…people kep telling me “you must read it”.. Now I re-read them 10-12 times..and they just get better. Especially Death..the best character of all..:)

  26. That post is interesting…I think my book stands resemble myself very good either.

  27. If my bookshelf resembled me then: 1) I’d be a pity as I don’t have a bookshelf 2) Most my books live either on the floor, in a draw or downstairs on our dining room table…. 3) I only have a handful of university-related books, and a few Margaret Atwood Books as I sold all my html & Css ones on ebay about 6months ago.

  28. Yay Pterry! :D
