Sorry for the Downtime

My apologies if you came to the site earlier and found it unavailable. The server I am on was down for over 7 hours this morning. It’s annoying, and sad.

It’s sad, because I had over 2 years of fantastic uptime from Site5, they moved me to a new server last year and now I have problem after problem after problem. Even now, months on from the original move, I know for a fact that something is incorrectly configured with my account/server because if you go to a subdomain that doesn’t exist, instead of giving you a 404 you get my old “my own.” clique. I don’t want to report it, because I don’t want another week of downtime while they fuck things up even further.

It’s annoying, because I’m a good customer and I don’t deserve this kind of arsing about. I’ve given Site5 a total of 23 referrals, which is probably around $2000+ in revenue. Most of you guys, my readers, are using them based on my personal recommendation. I’ve created a small handful of support tickets, so I’m not even pestering the techies regularly. I don’t normally bother to claim back credit if uptime doesn’t reach 99.99% and I occasionally pop in at the support forum to help. I’ve left about 5 excellent reviews of Site5 on various hosting review websites. I even recommended them for 2 separate work accounts, based on previous experience.

My account expires in July. Site5 have less than 6 months to impress me, or I’m moving to Clook. I’m not just talking about providing the promised uptime either… I want decent support. I want my website to work every time I visit, I want them to quit with the bullshit unlimited packages that are capped in the FUP providing you nowhere near what you expect. Of course, it’s not going to happen, is it?

Your site has only had downtime for me for…about 4 or 5 minutes one time…xD

There were a couple of occasions where your site would be down for…almost a day. :S It’s not your fault though so you don’t need to apologise.

Did you mention something about The Planet before? I had "things" (sorry, I can’t think of the words I’m looking for today) hosted with them and have had problems; losing my projects, data and whatnot.

I say host your site with Awardspace.com
    I love em!
They’re are not perfect, but then who of us are?
You get a great package for a great price.
What tips it for me is that you get just about everything you want including SSH (which you can use to tunnel) which can make running your sites that bit easier.
The basic package (they have a free one too that is superb) gives you 60GB storage and a 1000GB/mo traffic plus… well I could go on!
No I’m not asking for referral fees!

@Annie: Site5 servers are now based at The Planet, yeah. In fact, it was a move to a TP server that started all these problems off.

What plan would you have to go for at Clook?

How about EC2 + EBS? All of my stuff is running there and those things just keep on chugging along – (knock on wood!). It is $75/mo though.

I can’t afford that kind of cost just for a simple blog Chris, heh.

Hosting is quite a personal thing (almost like picking a wallpaper or icon arrangement!) but I have to comment to put my vote in for Pair Networks (www.pair.com). I’ve hosted with them since 1996 (yes, really!) with some incredibly high traffic sites, and they’ve never let me down. I’ve a few dedicated boxes with them for clients, and a few shared space accounts for little projects. They’re on the ball re: PHP updates too, great database servers, and none of this "unlimited" crap either, they work things out based on resource (cpu, bandwidth, disk space) – you know, the sort of things all hosts should do :) Anyway advert over.

I already wondered what was going on when I tried to visit your site a few times during the day, but when I read your twitters I figured it was site5. Glad to see you’re back up though, let’s hope it stays that way from now on!

Cant say i didn’t tell you so.
Site5 were pathetic when i was with them and i suspect that whatever issue they think tey resolved moving you to a new box it’s still not fixed.

The whole dodgey sub-domain thing would be that something has fucked with the DNS entries when they moved you…morons.

    Good riddance i say :D

Arg nuts! I hope everything gets better soon. :(

Speaking of "My Own", do you still run that? D: It would be a shame to see it abandoned.

Meh, it’s obvious you jinxed yourself :P
Hopefully it’ll get better, moving hosting is such a hassle.
