Appeal: Cat and Kitten Homes Needed

If you’re based in the States and in a position to offer a cat or two a home (either temporary fostering or permanent adoption) please read through this post.

If you’re based in Coweta County, Georgia, there are 42 furry babies on the urgent list at Coweta County Animal Control. That means that if they don’t find homes soon, they will be euthanised. You can see a list of urgent cats and urgent kittens (both with pics) on the shelter rescue website, of all shapes, sizes and breeds. Please see the cat_lovers community post for more information if you’re able to take in one of those cats/kittens.

If you’re based in Atlanta, Georgia, there are kittens that need adopting (with pics) but because the shelters are full (kitten season is in full swing) they would also be euthanised instead of given a chance at life. These kittens are approximately 5 weeks old (the same age as Fudge when we got him) and are litter-trained.

Please see the respective entries in the cat_lovers community for information on adopting, and if you don’t have the capacity to take in even one of these kitties, pass the details on to someone who can. Thanks everyone :)

I really wish I didn’t click the link now because seeing those poor kitties made my heart weep and wish I could do something. Hopefully some of your readers will be cat lovers in Georgia.

There are plenty of cats to rescue in other parts of the world. I’ve had my fair share of cats over the years, great companions. Shame my current landlord doesn’t allow pets.

Indeed. Unfortunately Karl would murder me if I tried taking them all in. :)

I live not too far from Atlanta (when I’m not living in Washington State, which would be across the country…), but my mom would kill me if I brought home a cat, and my school dorms don’t really like furry friends. However, I do have a friend interning in ATL who wants a cat for his apartment this coming school year, perhaps he’ll look into the kittens if I tell him about it.

Maybe you are just supporting Cats in the USA but for some weird reason I just assumed you were British, you come across that way =)

Ohh, I sure hope that those kitties get good homes. Aside from being in another state, I already have two kitties, so I can’t take any more. One was a stray and one was from the Humane Society (basically animal control, but they never euthanize).

Ohhh, I hope those kitties find good homes. The first one on the urgent kittens page might euthanized by tomorrow. :(

I’m pretty much in the same situation as Robbie (different state with two cats). I don’t think my dad would like it if we took in another cat anyway.

Why *this* appeal for cats needing homes? There are probably thousands of cats across the U.S. that are about to be euthanised, especially with kitten season coming — so why are you acting on the behalf of *this* call for help? Why not all of them? Why not none at all? All cat lovers know about these things and probably have the amount of cats they can have. I just don’t understand why you’re advertising this. It doesn’t make sense.

Because they came to my attention, Stephanie.

Surely if we all followed the logic “if you can’t help them all, don’t bother at all” – which is basically what you’re saying – nobody would ever get any help?

If just one of my visitors out of the thousands that fly through on a monthly basis sees this and rescues a cat – not even necessarily one of these cats – surely that in itself is better than shrugging my shoulders and saying “nothing I can do, best not bother”?

I’m not trying to say “don’t bother at all”. I am trying to figure out why you’re advocating THIS rescue shelter when there are tons of advocating pathways for you in your own community, in my community, in the world community. Okay, I get that this is the one that came to your attention. But it’s certainly not the only one out there. Sure, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the one visitor out of the thousands to rescue a cat because of you. But I also wonder about your influence.

Anyway. There are tons of cats out there that could use help. There are also tons of dogs and people and endangered species. But seeing as you’re not from GA, your call for help in GA is just weird to me.

And that is my reaction, and now I am off to find something else to fulfill some boredom with.

That’s so terrible. I love cats and always have loved them, so I wish I could help. It’s too bad I live in New Jersey and am therefore too far away…

:( If I were in GA and had space for an extra kitty, I’d definitely pick up one. I’ll keep this in mind, though – I have some friends in Atlanta, but I doubt that they want a cat.

I’m not advocating any shelter.. I don’t know the shelter and I don’t care for its policies. I’m simply appealing on behalf of the cats.

But I also wonder about your influence.

You don’t have to have influence to do any good. As soon as Google picks up this post – and it indexes my site daily – anyone searching for “georgia cat rescue” or “adopt cat georgia” (not exact, but you get the picture) is likely to see my post. That’s the kind of visitor I’m thinking of.

There are tons of cats out there that could use help.

Again, are you saying that I shouldn’t do anything because I can’t help them all? Short of donating to cat charities locally, which I do, and encouraging friends and neighbours to neuter their cats, which I do, the only medium I have through which I can help is my website.

But seeing as you’re not from GA, your call for help in GA is just weird to me.

I’m not from China but I donated after their earthquake. I’m not from New Orleans but I donated after the hurricane hit. Should we only try and help in our own back yard?

I really hope someone reads this and either adopts a cat from the above mentioned shelter or gets influenced by it and tries to find a cat or kitten from a shelter closer to home.

People usually go for kittens from a breeder because they have a weird idea about cats / kittens from a shelter. While instead they could be saving an animal that would otherwise be put to sleep.

Sam was saved from death last year, he was the only survivor of the nest and had to spend 3 weeks of his very short life in the vet’s hospital. His eyes are bad and he can’t really see in the dark very good (or so I have been told) but my sister (who works at the vet and took Sam there in the first place) asked me if I still wanted him. And now he has a happy life at my place, he’s spoiled rotten.

I think if I hadn’t taken him in he would have gone to a shelter, but generally people only want healthy cats and Sam still needed treatment after he left the vet’s so I doubt anyone would have taken him that easily.

I’m glad you posted this, even though it might not rescue all (or any cat) from the shelter mentioned in your post. It might save some in others :)

That’s so sad! :( I truly hope someone adopts those cats, especially those that are scheduled to die tomorrow.

I read an RD article about a shelter (set up by a lawyer) that has managed to keep a policy of no euthanasia (dubious grammar there). Sadly it isn’t a method that can be easily adopted elsewhere.

    Thanks for the heads-up…sadly I can’t help directly. :(

Those kittens are so adorable! I wish I can get one but I don’t live in the area :(

    I hope people adopt them!

I saved 2 cats this month. I live in the southern part of California called the Inland Empire. It is adopt a cat month at the local shelter. I adopted 2 June 1st but one was severely injured & never should have been put up. So I got another who has some weird ears. They both are too funny. My animal shelter has over 400 cats I think they said & they plan to have most gone by the end of the month. If I have $50 I’d go get 2 more. I might just do it though. We can have 4 cats in the city. I am a firm believer no house is a home until there is a cat residing there. :D
