Doctor, Doctor!

My 18-monthly depo checkup/3-monthly jab was this morning. I was particularly looking forward to this after the doctor had to Google the procedure and the nurse left my arse exposed to the world last time.

Fortunately this doctor — although obviously new — was more clued up than the last guy. He started asking me the right questions.. “have I had any problems?” and “do you smoke?”. He took my blood pressure, asked me what I did for a living and then he weighed me. A look of confuzzlement (confused puzzlement) spread across his face and he started mumbling to himself before asking “did they weigh you your shoes on last time?”… yes Mr Doctor, why, is something wrong?

After an embarrassed (<- him) pause he started stuttering questions about lifestyle, exercise and walking. Poor bloke was nervous as hell (I'm not that scary?) and I didn't help matters because I just sat there, staring at him with my big innocent "what are you trying to say?" eyes. Anyway, it turns out that I've put on about 3.5kgs (7.7lbs-ish) since my last weigh-in (February 15th) and I need to get off my lardy arse and do some exercise — I've been prescribed a 15 minute brisk walk every day. No more stuffing down on greasy butties and cake for me.

  1. When I go to the doctors they tell me the opposite, but to eat more in a healthy way. Unfortunately for my body I associate, “eating more” as “eating more chocolate”. I think my blood is brown like the chocolate river in Willy Wonka by now. I need to do more exercise too. I frequently joke that my fingers are skinny because I exercise them and that if typing was an Olympic sport then I’d get the gold. What that really means is – I’m completely and utterly lazy and I’d rather sit in front of the PC instead of getting my butt in gear and going for a walk and/or jog. Exercise is a foreign word to me.

  2. Ohh, I had mine today too… the jab that is. I got mine in my arm this time. I’m not so keen on exposing my backside to the world anymore (they have a window without any blinds… admittedly it looks out onto countryside, but you just never know who’s looking!). I never get weighed at the Docs. I get my blood pressure taken (always perfect) and a few questions, but that’s about it.

  3. Everybody’s into that routine at the minute. Maybe it will do you some good? There’s no such thing as being “over healthy” I suppose, he he.

  4. Yes, more exercise will help a lot. You’ll be more awake and more energized with higher seratonin (sp?) levels. Doctor Googling the procedure? Man, that is very bad. I wonder how he passed medical school. This doctor seems just a bit inexperienced, maybe he’ll turn out good in the future.

  5. That is the first time I’ve heard a doctor or nurse do that. Where’s the privacy hey? Even though excercise is good it doesn’t hurt to treat yourself once in a while, hehe.

  6. “Iit doesn’t hurt to treat yourself once in a while, hehe.” Ill drink to that :D

  7. I am sorry if you are not well! Exercise is hard to start up with but soon you will feel restless without it :) Maybe – if you don’t like walking just for walking sake you can always bring your camera and maybe something significant will be capturable. Have a nice walk.

  8. I tried the patch then depo, but I finally ended up on the pill because neither worked for me :P I’ve gained so much weight from birth control and sheer laziness -_-

  9. 3.5kg is that much?… well I mean depending on the initial number of kilos… You scary? Well I’m not sure if you ever scared me per se, but I’m sure some n00bs got impressed by you at some time. And by impressed I mean, not being able to post anymore :P

  10. I still say you worry far too much about a tiny little bit of gained weight Jem. Regardless of what he said, We do weigh different amounts if weighed at different times of the day. I think he may have been wary of your “bodyguard” perhaps hehe. Now just to cheer you up no end, I have found the perfect cure for your problem……You need a Wii!! Read this article i found on losing weight… http://weight-loss-methods.suite101.com/article.cfm/video_gamers_lose_weight So there is your answer……. Do the same job, eat the same amount as you have been, just get a Wii! :o)

  11. it’s not strange to weight different than you did last time, it might have been another time of day, it might have been another day in your cycle, it all can affect your weight. More exercise is never bad of course but I think your doctor might be blowing up things and making it worse than it really is. Besides, a bit odd of him not to directly say to you what you wanted to say, straight to the point is the best way to go.

  12. yes, you should get a wii (and not just so I can come over and play with it, honest…)

  13. I’m a teen, and I’m still growing, but I’ve gained 10lbs this year so far…. eesh… your doc. seems a bit harsh.

  14. And no fudge either, because we know what happens when we eat too much fudge. :D I need more exercise myself. Tell that to my boyfriend’s game consoles.

  15. Wow about the “googling”…that would scare the hell out of me. O.o Maybe I should try that 15min a day thing…probably would do me good too. :P

  16. I agree with your Mum, Jem. Video games are always the answer. xD As for getting off your lazy arse, who cares, ne? Unless you are unhappy with your weight, it much doesn’t matter. It’s not like your obese or anything. I think. xD

  17. Congratulations, Jem! I don’t comment much, but I am a frequent visitor to your website! Love the site, content and eerything is great… Keep it up, because Jemjabella really is something to be proud of :) Well done, and happy birthday Jemjabella! Tom.
