Changes Are Afoot!

If you read my entry the other day you’ll probably remember that I’m making some changes to the site. This entry is just to give you a bit more detail on some of the bigger changes which’ll give you chance to leave feedback that I can then ignore. Oops, I mean implement, possibly. :P

I mentioned the new folders already — this is going to be part of several new things. Firstly, more targeted links. I am removing the links page and each subsection of the website will have related links placed on them specifically. jemjabella.co.uk/reviews will contain links to other reviewing sites (website, book and game), jemjabella.co.uk/scribblings will link to other writing sites, etc. Secondly, I will be on everyone’s case to give me more targeted links too. From now on, if you visit the site for the reviews, you link the reviews section, if you visit for the ‘stuff’, you link the stuff section.

Talking of links — obviously removing the links page will mean removing the links to all of the blogs I like to read. I know some of you are all about the links and quite frankly, it’s tough shit. If you’re going to read my blog, do it because you want to, not because I link to you. That being said, I will be adding the majority of links to my new del.icio.us thingy and I’ll be trying to plug at least one site per blog entry that is relevant to each particular entry.

I’ll also be implementing a few SEO “tactics”. More descriptive and appropriate titles for individual pages/sections, better meta descriptions to improve the ranking of individual parts of the site (this is also what the targeted linking is about).

Of course, last but not least, new content. There’s already a couple of unrequested reviews mid-way (some of the suggestions I got were awesome, thanks) and I will get around to finishing the scribbling topics that were suggested about a year ago. So, there we go. Feel free to let me know what you think.

  1. you’re not gonna link me? pft. I’m never coming back here >:-/ On an unrelated note – it’s funny that you signed up for delicious the other day, because I signed up fairly recently too. I haven’t really bothered to do anything there, though. *is looking forward to the drama your upcoming reviews shall bring* hooray!

Rose, it disturbs me how quickly you post on my new entries sometimes.

  3. …I must be an avid fan :O Especially since I’ve been checking here since this morning for a new entry. For some reason I had a feeling that today would be an entry day. And I just can’t miss one of those :P

  4. I actually think they’re good ideas :) You go for it!

  5. Good job on the meta descriptions etc. That’s something that bothers me with the header/footer method of ‘skinning’ – the [head] section of a page shouldn’t be templated content, but should be tailored for maximum usefulness. I shall look forward to seeing all the changes, and especially those unrequested reviews!

  6. Changes are Afoot* — Pardon my nitpicking but my rear does a funny movement whenever title words that should not be capitalized are. I think it is somehow correlated my going postal over matters like my mail being delivered wrinkled. A links page has been rendered disposable by RSS aggregators for me hence I only link to new discoveries. There used to be a major fishing expedition out and about for links and an Olympics style competition to be linked. Now everyone’s hitting the low waves and feeding site links to the sharks.

  7. I’m still trying to figure if/how my links page fits into my Big Plan.

  8. OmgzJemplzlinktomekthnxbye. …it sounds like a much more organized backend. I can’t wait to see how things are different (even if they’re subtle, they’ll be different).

  9. Finally, someone is smart enough to have theme-specific links, or as you call them… “targeted links”. ;) I actually think it makes more sense that way. I wish I could get rid of my links page (it’s not really useful) but I have a couple of link exchanges that I don’t really want to just delete their links for…

  10. Organisation! The organsational freak in me rejoices at the changes soon to be implemented in jjb. Lovely! Yet I like my links pages, I don’t think I could be bothered to make a del.icio.us account and then adding all of my links to it… But yay for the changes!

  11. Yay new content!

  12. You are just too cool for school. I wish I had your drive for making the Internet the best it can be.

  13. That’s a very good idea… I’ve been thinking of doing that with my site too… but considering that I can only use onine FTP (like net2ftp[dot]com – stupid firewall settings) I can’t bear to upload all that stuff individually. I can’t say I won’t be sorry that you take your link to me down, but considering the link your site has on my sidebar (under daily digest) I’ll still be coming back, ’cause I like your site ;) Still being linked by you made me feel cool… Anyway good luck with changes, and can’t wait for the unrequested reviews. I hope they’re from WPRs *evil grin*

  14. Wow… lots of changes, but it’s kind of exciting in a way.

  15. Yay, newness. I come here and read every post, and I don’t comment for linkage. I like your idea, will each subsection have a different layout? Perhaps the same theme, but a different colour? :)

  16. I may sound like a complete ignoramus, but what does SEO stand for?

  17. Sonya: it stands for Search Engine Optimisation (*smacks Jem lightly with an [abbr] tag*)

  18. I think I understand the linking (individually?) to sections of your site – personally, I think it’s a better way to ‘sort’ out folders/files. :P (is using the page and permalinks method with wordpress =p)
