Blogging About Work

What with the recent increase in dooce-ing and an article in this weeks Micro Mart about “the perils of blogging” it got me thinking about how many of my readers write about work, and how many would be willing to give up their blog or lose their job, should the situation arise.

Personally, I’m quite a private person and I don’t blog extensively about my home life or my job anyway. Vague comments about changing employment or unspecific details on new tasks are about as far as I’ll push it. I made it clear I blogged when I had my interview for my new job too — even went so far as to use my personal website as an example of my coding and design (haha) skills.

So, assuming that you are employed, what would you do if your employer called you into the office and said “stop blogging or lose your job” (even if you don’t blog about work)? Does your employer know that you blog? What do you think about people who get fired for blogging — just desserts for speaking out of turn or a violation of their right to free speech? It’d be interesting to hear what you all think, even if you’re not currently employed.

Edit: Off-topic, I forgot to mention my new page on my collection of geek t-shirts.

Blogging Lessons?

I had to prepare one of the IT rooms at work earlier — make sure everything is working, plugged in (unplugging the network cables seems to be a hobby of some of the kids), clean up sweetie wrappers, etc. Did it in about 20 minutes and then went to speak to the Head of Science. I came back to check up on things to see 30 kids each with their own WordPress weblog being taught how to write a book review…

Why didn’t I have lessons like that when I was in school?!

Frickin’ BE Browsing

I’ve been browsing around using BlogExplosion for the past 20 minutes or so, waiting for Karl to finish work. It’s ideal for moments like this when I’m bored out of my skull but can’t be arsed to do anything constructive like script writing.. only, there’s one big problem. I find an interesting blog, think of something to say in reply, write out a comment only to scroll down and see: This blog does not allow anonymous comments.

I’m NOT bloody anonymous. I have a name, e-mail address and a URL. Just because I haven’t signed up to your shitty Blogger bollocks doesn’t mean I’m anonymous, it means I have the ability to write my own blog script thankyouverymuch. Somebody, please, tell me what the frickin’ point is of joining a frickin’ blog program to promote your frickin’ blog only to alienate half of your frickin’ commenters?

Frickin’ idiots.

..and I’m still not getting 99.9% of my e-mails. Fixed, I think, but I’ve not received any backdated e-mails sent while the problem was happening. :/

Job Interviews, etc.

I’ve actually been putting off blogging for the past week or so because everything I’ve want to write about has been job-orientated, and I didn’t want to go and get myself dooced before I’ve even been given the job.

Anyway, I think it’s safe to say that I had two interviews for new jobs all lined up and they both got arranged for the same day. A bit of wangling later and I managed to get to job 2 interview with an agreement that boss at job 1 would give me an interview providing he didn’t find a successful candidate in the first interviews. Boss did find a candidate so no second interview, but that’s cool. I’m fine with that.

Now that I’ve confused you with this “job 1″ and “job 2″ business, I’ll just sum up everything by saying that I actually ENJOYED my interview yesterday. The people were nice and the individual task I had to do (to demonstrate my skills, I will assume) had me giggling because it involved reviewing their current intranet which I do as a hobby and therefore completely rock at.

Although my mind went blank two/three times during the formal interview thus making me stumble over TCP/IP, DHCP etc.. I think I did well and have my fingers crossed for this job. You guys can start crossing your fingers too. The only thing not in my favour is the lack of years of experience, but I think I’m okay. We’ll see.. I’ll keep you updated.

I’m tired today, it’s been a long week.
