What do you want to do?

Just saw an interesting thread on one of the forums I visit, “what do you want to do?” So I had a think about it, and here’s my list (in no particular order):

Have more children (at least one), keep chickens, become more self-sufficient, work for myself, ride the world’s biggest rollercoasters, visit Egypt, finish one of my many(!) crochet blankets, climb a mountain, cook a perfect treacle sponge pudding, ride in a hot air balloon, visit the Ice Hotel, donate breastmilk for premature babies and complete my breastfeeding peer supporter training.

I will probably think of loads more as soon as I hit publish, but what do you want to do? :)

  1. Keeping chickens is super easy, as long as the area you live in allows them =). We’ve had ours for just over 6 months now and they are pretty maintenance free outside of feeding them an =d watering them.

Right now, my biggest thing is getting pregnant, going to the gym regularly, and finding a better work environment or being able to work for myself.

  2. I think you should keep adding to the list even though you’ve published it. I mean, I’ve known you for years, and I find a lot of this to be surprising and insightful. I was surprised you’ve never climbed a mountain, and then I remembered I live in the Rockies and it might not be as common elsewhere.

I want to visit a new country (which I will soon), move out on my own, write a novel, have a speaking part in a feature film, tour around all the places where important parts of WWII happened, live in Vancouver and learn to make perfect butter chicken from memory. Just off the top of my head. :D

I have climbed a mountain, but it wasn’t very big. In fact, thinking about it… it may have just been a large hill (what’s the difference?)

Anyway, I’m thinking start in Snowdonia and then one day I’ll do Everest ;)

      • I used to laugh at my friends from the East end of Canada because they’d point to a mountain and say we were going to climb it and I’d be like “that is a hill.”

Mountains don’t impress me, I’m SO blase about living next to them.

      • @Aisling – That’s always how I feel when people from much of the U.S. talk about climbing mountains. I’m from Washington. I’m surrounded by two mountain ranges, and I’m not particularly far from the Rockies either. Your 1,000 meter hill is not a mountain!

  3. I hope that you do everything on that list. I never knew that you could donate breastmilk, so I have learned something new. And it looks like you’re going to have another child soon, so all’s well!

Personally, in addition to getting married and having kids, I want to get a black belt, get a PhD, and spend most of my life solving autonomy problems and playing with robots. :P

  4. 1 more child in addition to Izzy and the beansprout, or is beansprout the +1? Also, if you want to climb a mountain, you should come visit me! Or, rather, visit me in North Carolina. We can climb mountains and then go to the new chocolate factory!

  5. Have a solo exhibition (hopefully this year), publish my graphic novel, illustrate a children’s book, try myself in animation, visit all the continents at least once, have children (1-2), teach children, live in a house with a yard and a vegetable garden, finish all my currently open projects… that’s off the top of my head, surely there must be more :)

  6. I remember telling my own mother that when I’d thought of all the things I wanted to do when I grew up that I would tell her. Sadly she passed away 11 years ago this coming February and I still have no clues as to what I want to do … I had lots of dreams when I was young, some of which I have experienced, some not. Swimming with dolphins is one I doubt I will ever get around to now; keeping chickens was already in practice when I was born – we lived on a farm but we called them Pookalegs because they would race after my eldest brother (who had the chicken meal in a tin) pecking frantically at his legs to be fed. I’ve ridden a real live racehorse at Newmarket and shot the perfect score at the shooting ranges aged 22. I share your love of rollercoasters and would happily join you on those and my list could go on and on but I’ll spare you all the tedium.

The treacle sponge pudding is simple… Get a heatproof 2pint sized bowl, empty a liberal amount of golden syrup into the bottom (about 2inches high) and then make up the basic Victoria sponge mix (2 eggs/2oz flour/sugar/butter) in a separate bowl then carefully pile the mix on top of the syrup. Take a piece of tinfoil and place a fold in the middle of it, then put that over the top of the bowl. Fasten the foil in place with either string or easiest – with a rubber band then place the bowl into a large saucepan with a good 3 inches of water and bring it to the boil. Steam for a good 1 1/2 hours checking that the level of water doesn’t drop too low and adding more if needs be. After the hour and a half has passed, take the bowl from the pan (very hot, be careful) and place it on the side. Remove the foil from the top and place a bowl or plate on the top and flip the bowl over with plate held carefully underneath. Bear in mind that some of the syrup will spread so the covering bowl (which ends up underneath) needs to either be large enough or have a raised edge to allow the syrup to run around the edges. Serve with custard, cream, ice cream or whatever you fancy. This pudding can also be made with summer fruits or whatever you prefer but be warned…. eat too much of it and you’ll end up a fatty like your mother ;)

  7. In no particular order – lose more weight (about 70 lbs), become a better housekeeper and cook, foster cats for the local animal rescue, and have a child or two (biological or adoption, whatever is more possible at this point).

  8. I want to do many things, but thinking about them is stressful … so I only consider a few at a time. I also kind of don’t know what I want to do. I suppose that I’d like to make more friends who live nearby.

  9. That is certainly an interesting list. I also would love to ride the fastest/tallest coasters.

I don’t really have anything in mind beyond getting my criminal justice degree and possibly expanding my family again after this pregnancy (far in the future). Oh, I also want to buy a house at some point.

  10. I’d like to increase my swimming mileage by spring to at least 5 miles. I’d like to get my knee all better and enter beach volley tournament in summer. I want to finish my MA thesis ASAP and move into a new flat on my own.
