In Which I Bullet Point

  • Didn’t manage to spend any of my week off clearing my inbox. Oops. Did however manage to see my niece and nephew, as well as tidying up around the flat.
  • BellaBook4 and BellaBlocks (1) very nearly ready for release. Now that my Internet connection has stopped dicking about I may be able to get everything finished.
  • Have ordered a ‘new’ phone. Although I don’t use my phone very often, the Nokia 7373 is really starting to piss me off. (Various reasons.) I’ve bought a Sony Ericsson K800i from eBay (2nd hand). I’ve had Nokias for over 10 years, so it’ll be interesting to use something else.
  • Feeling very pregnant of late. Heavy, forgetful, no balance whatsoever and still being sick in the mornings. However, I’ve only put on approx 6lbs out of the “average” 12lbs by this point. I have no idea if that’s good or bad.

In non bullet-pointy news, I’m thinking of converting to Chyrp again, as there’s been another release. Need to test to see if it will support the size of my database yet. Running my own blog is all well and good but I still only have the ability to blog from the control panel. Editing posts, comments etc is so low on my priority list it’s never going to get done, and while PHPMyAdmin rules it’s tedious to have to maintain the site through it (and I’d rather cut off my fingers than use WordPress again).

Update (21:03): BellaBlocks is now live. As usual, bug reports etc to jem@jemjabella.co.uk

Warning

This post is over 6 months old. This means that, despite my best intentions, it may no longer be accurate. Age, motherhood, experience, loss... these things have all changed me from when this blog was started back in the heady (ha) days of my youth.

As much as I would like to go back and edit 10 years of archives to provide an insight into the 'me' of now — to update coding snippets and revise website advice — it would probably take years to do so (by which point I'd have to start again!) This would defeat the point of keeping these archives anyway.

Please take these posts for what they are: a brief look into my past, my history, my journey.

It still seems odd to me that you’d prefer slogging through maintaining your blog through PHPMyAdmin rather than using WordPress, but to each their own. :P

How many weeks along are you now?

I have nothing against WP, don’t get me wrong, just don’t like it for my own site.

    23 weeks on Tues :)

I love WP, but their latest release (2.8.1) seems to have caused more things to break than to work properly (oddly enough I’ve only had problems with it in a fresh install, it works fine on my blog, which was upgraded from a previous WP version).

*is excited for the release of BellaBlocks*

Yay pregnancy woes! I have never been pregnant myself, but I can’t wait. I look forward to getting sick every morning! :P

As for WP… I used to love it. I find any versions past.. 2.3 got way too bloaty with random features. I’ll probably write my own CMS someday instead (much like yourself).

I’m so excited for BellaBlocks! I have it on my local machine right now, and it’s lovely.

Oooh, Bellabook and BellaBlock! Can’t wait! I saw the beta release of BellaBook on your Twitter, but I’m no good at beta testing IMHO :/

I swear Jem, every time you mention something about morning sickness I imagine the pea soup scene from the Exorcist.

I’m also looking for a new phone. Ironically it’s to replace my rather annoying K800i which keeps doing stuff. Like trying to call Amanda in the dead of night. Or connecting to the internet which isn’t covered by my contract…

Ahh, I know how it goes for the emails. I’ve got hundreds to go through. I’m just so tempted to mark all as read. And that’s just one email too :(

I haven’t put on any weight yet (I’m 20 weeks on Tues) although it looks like I’ve swallowed a beach ball. :(

Plz hurry. If only for me xD

I’m also in the market for a new phone, I’d be interested in hearing how the K800i works for you. My current sony ericsson has a main feature of being an mp3 player, and anytime you close the flip, the outside screen goes to the music player. I haven’t found an option to turn this off, and I’d prefer my outside display to tell me simple things like time, signal strength, missed calls or messages, etc. These things are all THERE, but they’re tiny in comparisson to the giant "music player" display.

But the actual reason I’m switching is because the flip part is kinda broken. But still, the music player is very irritating.

I had a k850i (brand new), but it broke within the year. Technically it was under warranty but I couldn’t be bothered to go through the tedious process of sending it off to check exactly what was wrong with it, and then if they deemed that it was my fault to have to pay them for the trouble of checking… I have no idea what happened to it in all honesty, it just literally stopped working whilst I was in Japan (very, very annoying), so I’ve been using my old Nokia phone until a week or so’s time, and then I’m going to get myself a LG Viewty Smart GC900.

I hated the k850i, really. It bombed so badly in terms of usability. I don’t know how the k800 compares, but… the touch screen activated with my ear as I was talking on the phone and I kept sending blank text messages to people (seriously, happened all the time, big problem) and the camera lens was covered with a bit of plastic, despite the fact that the lens itself had a plastic cover that flipped off when the camera was on – so the plastic over the lens was ALWAYS smudged and took shit photos, and to top all that off the flash was somehow mis-timing with the shutter (not just me, everyone’s k850i was the same) so photos would always appear really dark.

Needless to say I’m not buying another Sony Ericsson for a while.

The K800i doesn’t have the touch screen, which was a big part of my decision to go with that one over a newer model (I’ve seen the C902 and while it’s a nice phone, it has touchy screen bits). Can’t abide touch screens (fingerprints, yuk!)

I had a good play with my brother’s (he has the K800i) before I decided to go with it, so I *think* I know what I’m letting myself in for, but if it all goes belly-up it’s no huge deal because it’s second hand and I got it for a decent price. :D

Boooo and you discouraged me from switching to Chyrp!! Meanface. >:( Hehehe, if you try it let me know how it works for you, as if your blog doesn’t esplode then I know mine probably won’t!

First thing first : thanks for pointing out Chyrp.
I like WP but I feel bad not using it to it’s full power ( it’s like the brain, only using 10% or so of it. I do feel bad about that )

So, I looked at Chyrp and it’s promising but honestly, if you know how to make a theme with that : you are more than a ninja ! ( and so let me know !!!! )

I like WP, but still have not quite figured out the in's and outs of how it works. My problem also lies in the lack of PHP knowledge. Im sure I could do a lot more with it if I knew more PHP.

In my experience, I have much preferred Sony Ericssons to Nokia…I used to be a Nokia girl, but fell in love with my Sony Ericsson as soon as I got it. They are, or were two years ago, everso easy to use, and they just make sense. They do what you want them to do when you want them to, and don't try to make decisions for you. However, do NOT get a phone that has a combination of both buttons and touch screen. I always find myself "hovering" my finger over a touch screen button (getting ready to press it) and accidentally calling someone, cancelling a call, etc. :)
