Reversed Out?

I can’t decide now whether to keep my layout as it is, or have it reversed out. Welcome all feedback, unless it’s “you suck, stop fucking about in photoshop dumbass”. :P

Warning

This post is over 6 months old. This means that, despite my best intentions, it may no longer be accurate. Age, motherhood, experience, loss... these things have all changed me from when this blog was started back in the heady (ha) days of my youth.

As much as I would like to go back and edit 10 years of archives to provide an insight into the 'me' of now — to update coding snippets and revise website advice — it would probably take years to do so (by which point I'd have to start again!) This would defeat the point of keeping these archives anyway.

Please take these posts for what they are: a brief look into my past, my history, my journey.

Also, you suck, stop fucking about in photoshop dumbass. ;)

After a lot of flickering between the two I go with Reversed Out. Mainly, because your most important part of the site (the blog) is in white and the white is the first thing my eye catches. I see no pink though…

Ooh, Reversed Out definitely for me. I think it looks better.

  5. Nellie says: November 13, 2008 at 8:14 pm # ·

    Reversed Out!

If you get enough votes for both of them, theme switcher?

  6. Jem says: November 13, 2008 at 8:14 pm # ·

Theme switchers are too much hassle.. you end up having to maintain two bloody sites effectively *meh*

  7. M says: November 13, 2008 at 8:14 pm # ·

I prefer it as it is now :P

  8. Aisling says: November 13, 2008 at 8:17 pm # ·

I prefer the reversed one. :)

  9. Stephanie says: November 13, 2008 at 8:21 pm # ·

Either one you pick, I think asides should have a box about them, that way you can tell the difference between the two. Because right now, they just look out of place.

  10. Jem says: November 13, 2008 at 8:23 pm # ·

I’ve not finished tweaking the asides :p

    I agree.

I like the current layout better. Keep it as is.

  13. Teesee says: November 13, 2008 at 8:35 pm # ·

I prefer the reversed one. Although the blue side buttons in the reverse layout looks a little off in colour against the blue background.

  14. Katy says: November 13, 2008 at 8:38 pm # ·

I like it how it is :)

  15. Stephanie says: November 13, 2008 at 8:39 pm # ·

You HAVE Photoshop. How useful do you find it, as someone with not a whole lot of graphic design skill, like me?

I say leave it. I especially like how the main content box is now boxed by white; if you have to switch, keep this kind of border. Do you understand what I mean…?

And what Stephanie said. Asides are too weird.

  16. Kaylee says: November 13, 2008 at 8:40 pm # ·

    Reversed out… I think :P

    You mean like this, Stephanie?

  18. Nick says: November 13, 2008 at 8:44 pm # ·

Reversed Out (if you’re gonna keep the asides integrated into the main posts area)

  19. Annie says: November 13, 2008 at 8:50 pm # ·

    Reversed out.

The white looks better for the main content than as a sidebar.

  20. Nyx says: November 13, 2008 at 8:58 pm # ·

    Leave it as is please.

  21. Hev says: November 13, 2008 at 9:05 pm # ·

Personally, I like them both. I know not much help. So I would say it is up to you.

  22. Vitalis says: November 13, 2008 at 9:19 pm # ·

Why not make a completely new layout if you’re contemplating a new design? It gives you a chance to start fresh and I’ve found through experience that you’re more inclined to dislike a layout if you build upon an old one.

  23. Ann says: November 13, 2008 at 9:24 pm # ·

Leave it. The blue emphasises the grey too much making it look drab (love that word) and then the grey and blue together contrasts too much with the white.
Why not just design something completely new?

  24. Jem says: November 13, 2008 at 9:27 pm # ·

I am too lazy to do something new.

That said, after changing the font, I quite like this white on blue thing rather than the reversed out version :)

  25. Stephanie says: November 13, 2008 at 9:30 pm # ·

I like the asides, now. They don’t look silly, anymore. And I’m a fan of the font, too! Tahoma?

  26. Regine says: November 13, 2008 at 9:34 pm # ·

I like this one a lot better. I didn’t like the reversed out one cause everyone’s doing grey/back on white. This layout is kind of special, and I love it for it. :)
Like I said before, this is the best you’ve done, why changing it so soon?

  27. Caasi says: November 13, 2008 at 9:40 pm # ·

I liked it better yesterday when the asides were different. Having them right on the edge of the blue just looks wrong. In a “I don’t have a real reason” way.

  28. Clem says: November 13, 2008 at 9:44 pm # ·

Reversed out. I like reading text on a white or dark grey background better.

  29. Sam says: November 13, 2008 at 10:02 pm # ·

Leave it. The blue content background appeals more to me.

  30. Romy says: November 13, 2008 at 10:27 pm # ·

I vote reversed out. It makes your main content “pop” more.

  31. Aimée says: November 13, 2008 at 10:29 pm # ·

I like the reversed out, although the hover-over for the nav looks more brown than gray… or maybe I’m just seeing things.

  32. Chris says: November 13, 2008 at 10:50 pm # ·

I think you should reverse it, it looks better… :)

  33. Bobbi-lee says: November 13, 2008 at 11:04 pm # ·

    reversed kthnx

  34. Stephanie says: November 13, 2008 at 11:13 pm # ·

Hey you changed the way the hover works on the navigation and I’m not a fan :(

  35. Jem says: November 13, 2008 at 11:15 pm # ·

I’ve not touched the nav.. what’s it doing/not doing? o.O

  36. Zatanna says: November 13, 2008 at 11:46 pm # ·

I think the reversed out one looks nicer. ;)

  37. Amanda says: November 13, 2008 at 11:55 pm # ·

    Leave it.

  38. Robert says: November 14, 2008 at 12:22 am # ·

They’re pretty similar, but I must say that Reversed Out works a little better. As Tracy said, the white draws our eyes to the content.

  39. Nat Marie says: November 14, 2008 at 1:08 am # ·

I like them both. I’m the last person to ask for decisions because I’m too indecisive!

  40. Kiera says: November 14, 2008 at 1:10 am # ·

The background behind your blog makes it pop more. If that’s what you are going for, the I think the reversed version better accomplishes having the blog immediately grab your attention.

  41. Kiera says: November 14, 2008 at 1:11 am # ·

Sorry, for double posting, what I meant to say was :

    “The white background….”

    There. :)

  42. Rachel says: November 14, 2008 at 1:12 am # ·

Honestly, Reversed Out seems a bit easier on mine eyeballs. Just my humble opinion. :)

By the way, I know you’ve been back for a while, but it’s my first time posting since, but welcome back and I’m glad to hear you’re doing better!

  43. Meg says: November 14, 2008 at 1:24 am # ·

I like Reversed Out, but if I were you, I’d leave it just because it’s less work. ;)

  44. Asia says: November 14, 2008 at 1:26 am # ·

I like the one you proposed to Stephanie the best. The white border really makes it pop out.

  45. Stephanie says: November 14, 2008 at 1:52 am # ·

Once upon a time when you hovered over, the rounded end, like, shortened. I don’t know how to describe it correctly, but basically, whatever link you were hovering over, the width of it was shorter than all the others. Now, if you hover, it just goes from rounded to square, and remains the same width…

  46. Shannon says: November 14, 2008 at 2:17 am # ·

I think I like the reversed out, better.

you suck, stop fucking about in photoshop dumbass

  47. Arwen says: November 14, 2008 at 2:26 am # ·

You suck, stop fucking about in photoshop dumbass.

    Lol, j/k.

I like it both ways. Maybe make skins?

  48. Sean says: November 14, 2008 at 3:08 am # ·

Stephanie, that happened to me for about a millisecond, your computer just isn’t loading the new images fast enough I suppose!

Uhhh… Uhhh… REVERSE? KEEP IT THE SAME? I like them both; the current is unique, the reverse brings my attention to the blog. I’ll go with reversed.

Now stop fucking about in Photoshop dumbass.

  49. Brent says: November 14, 2008 at 3:35 am # ·

    Reversed + Verdana = orgasm.

  50. Christina says: November 14, 2008 at 4:00 am # ·

Hmmm…I love both. This one, however, is more unique than the other.

  51. Meli says: November 14, 2008 at 4:34 am # ·

Leave it as is! The contrast looks so much better the way you have it… and white backgrounds all of the time are starting to get overcooked.

  52. Vera says: November 14, 2008 at 4:59 am # ·

Reversed. I rather refer dark text on light background. Tends to be more comfortable for my eyes.

  53. Mimi says: November 14, 2008 at 6:56 am # ·

Why are the asides on the bloggy now? :( I suppose that’s not a crime..! I like the design the way it is, so I guess my vote is for not reversing it. In the end though, it’s your site. You should probably do what makes YOU happiest!

  54. Anita says: November 14, 2008 at 7:33 am # ·

Actually, I liked it better as is.

  55. Jessica says: November 14, 2008 at 7:40 am # ·

Leave it as it is. I like the current one much better. :)

  56. Tracy says: November 14, 2008 at 8:10 am # ·

maybethislayout2.jpg looks good. I like thick borders.

  57. Mumblies says: November 14, 2008 at 8:10 am # ·

The reversed version is too bright and it hurts my eyes. I would prefer you left it as it is :o)

  58. Kim says: November 14, 2008 at 9:48 am # ·

The reversed version is too bright and it hurts my eyes.

    Agreed! Leave as is.

  59. Julia says: November 14, 2008 at 10:34 am # ·

I like it as it is now. I don’t really like how the section where your blogs will go is white as it looks white plain. Maybe you could give your current sidebar a background colour.

  60. Larissa says: November 14, 2008 at 12:07 pm # ·

I like it how it is now. ^_^

  61. Kris says: November 14, 2008 at 12:15 pm # ·

I like the reversed one, go with that one.

  62. Lizzie says: November 14, 2008 at 1:18 pm # ·

As it is; far more original.

  63. Vanesa says: November 14, 2008 at 2:19 pm # ·

Either way is fine, but I’d rather see reversed out.

  64. Kristina says: November 14, 2008 at 5:48 pm # ·

Reversed out would be cools. =D

  65. Tyler Matthews says: November 14, 2008 at 6:06 pm # ·
