In Another Life
I think in another life, if I had the opportunity to go to school all over again, I would become a lawyer/solicitor or even a barrister of some sort.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not thinking about a change of career. This isn’t a mid-life crisis 10 years too early; I love being geeky and I love coding. I also know that law isn’t as glamorous as TV makes out. It’s just that when the drama flares up and actually involves some serious allegations and perhaps even consequences, I get to put on my Internet Lawyer hat (we’ve all done it, no point denying it) and get my teeth into some real nitty gritty research. Case in point (pun?): investigating the legal implications involved with Crazy B’s threats and manipulation. It’s fascinating reading through the TOS/AUP agreements to see who can be held liable for what.
There was also the whole Frozen Midnight/Jamie Timbre thing. Although by the time I got “into” the fiasco a lot of people had already done the donkey work (using Google to our advantage), I had to read up on LLCs and try and dig up information on the background of the “company” so I knew what was what.
It’s.. interesting. I may — when I’m not trying to teach myself 12 different programming languages — get more into law as a hobby. Perhaps mould it into my “personal development for 2008″ goal. I reckon Internet, defamation and/or copyright laws as a starter. You don’t have to have a qualification in something to enjoy reading about it, right? Well, I already know the answer to that: my job proves that’s possible, I think.

This post is over 6 months old. This means that, despite my best intentions, it may no longer be accurate. Age, motherhood, experience, loss... these things have all changed me from when this blog was started back in the heady (ha) days of my youth.
As much as I would like to go back and edit 10 years of archives to provide an insight into the 'me' of now — to update coding snippets and revise website advice — it would probably take years to do so (by which point I'd have to start again!) This would defeat the point of keeping these archives anyway.

I enjoyed reading about HTML, CSS, etc.. and then later on PHP. That’s what got me where I am today :) -

The Jaime fiasco was an interesting read… I’m glad that crook went down. I hope that action can be taken against B-Lee and her kiddie host. They’ve both put so many of my net pals through hell :P

Well, to be in internet lawyer one should also have skills working with the internet and coding certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing would it? Why not get this OU thing under your belt then look into that too perhaps? You can never be too smart can you? I still say whatever you set your heart on you can achieve Jem, you just have to put your mind to it. :o)

Perhaps in 10 years time, when you do have a midlife crisis, you could retrain and do a law course. That gives you 10 years to read up on internet laws and copyright laws and things! And will give us more interesting reads this year, I’d love to learn more about what happens with crazy b. Obviously she’s making up rubbish, possibly telling the cops a load more rubbish and who knows – it might all come back and bite her on the bum!

@Carly – She’s not talking to the cops… she’s just making up crap to *scare* people. Seriously, cops could care less. They have more important stuff to do.

@Bubs yea like annoy teenagers, take there name, try and scare them and make them move on. Act like complete fuckers to us and think they are better than us! I would much rather they did care about threats of barbi calling people whore baby killers and such like.

@Bubs – that’s what I actually meant, but worded it completely wrong. I was trying to say that she’s giving all this talk about the cops, so it’d be funny to see if there is a real case against her, which will bite her in the bum!

Like I said in the car the other night – if I had my time again, I’d probably follow my convicitions and not go computing as a career. I was actually intending to go down the electronic engineering route when I went to college, but I was persuaded to do IT instead. I don’t regret it, but if I did it again it would have to be electronics/electrical engineering, robotics, or automotive qualifications instead. Working on tractor engines and mitsubishis was a lot more tiring, but a lot more fulfilling. That said, I’d have ended up dealing with computers in either..heh.

I’ve taken law and whilst it’s been… kind of interesting so far, I don’t think I’d consider it as a career option. Obviously I’m only taking it at one of the most basic (ish) levels at the moment, but already I find it a pretty intense subject. There’s so many aspects to consider which is why I think it sucks as an A Level course :P Too much to remember. It’s definitely very interesting in areas though.

Well, more and more cases these days *do* involve Internet. It seems like it could be a viable career! But you may have to focus on things like child pornography, which would be quite draining and disturbing.

I like reading up on legal laws and things for dramatic consequences and everything, too, however, I get fed up with things too easily, and though I’m still young, and could still choose to be a lawyer, I’d never really make it through law school. Arrgh.

The applicability of law to every day life also was one of the main things that attracted me to taking up the subject and I myself love being an internet lawyer. But in real life it’s much more complicated than merely googling the issue or looking up an Act; there are cases upon cases and other legal principles you’re supposed to trawl through and pick out where it almost always has contradictions etc. Looong process.

I thought about being a lawyer for about a semester and got extremely bored with the early criminal justice classes. If I had stuck with it, I’d be graduating law school Spring 2009 instead of still trying to decide on a major.

In regards to copyright laws… I remember that you had a copyright page, but I can’t find it anymore. I’m just wondering: are people allowed to display Hex’s picture (the one in your about page) without your express permission?

With drive, yes, you could be a lawyer. :) You certainly can do research. If you know someone in law, simply ask them on copyright right laws in hard copy. Sometimes the internet tends to skip over all the small print, but since you like to be meticulous at times, it would not hurt. Or, you could go to the local library and find out. It takes a person with a lot of dedication to go through the schooling for that career. Anyway, you look like you have been busy with drama. Though strange to finish up…. Happy New Year!

Geesh, Jem don’t you know that people don’t want to take you on? If they don’t want to take you on in the internet do you actually think they would want to take you on in the legal world, lol. So yes, you would make a wonderful lawyer. But I would cry buckets of tears if you left the internet world, lol. Of course, you realize that I am not afraid to take you on. I can be just as big as you (for language usage I won’t call it what I call me), but I respect you to much to take you on, lol. Now remember to smile Jem. I am teasing you.
