Handy Ubuntu Apps/Links

In true chuck-myself-in-at-the-deep-end Jem style, I’ve been fiddling with Ubuntu again because there are certain things I want/need to learn. After spending several hours trying to familiarise myself with all the basic crap, I’ve started downloading some handy stuff that I figured I’d share, along with some useful links.

AutomatixAutomatix is a graphical interface for automating the installation of the most commonly requested applications in Ubuntu Breezy and Dapper. It very nicely upgraded my Firefox and Thunderbird without me having to do all of the manual command line stuff. Sorta defeats the point, but I was in a rush.

AllTray — I was actually only looking for a way to minimise Thunderbird, but this little beauty does everything. Discovered by Katy for me, via this Ubuntu Blog entry.

Of course, the best place for support is the official Ubuntu forums. I found a few helpful posts earlier, and was going to use ‘em to get me up and running on my Mum’s LAN, but it turned out I only had to tick a box (how totally awesome is that?)

Last but definitely not least, my own personal linux chick (I’ll probably get whacked for calling poor Sarah my ‘linux chick’ :P) and her handy dandy Beginning Linux Guide.

Enjoy! Feel free to share your own links..

Warning

This post is over 6 months old. This means that, despite my best intentions, it may no longer be accurate. Age, motherhood, experience, loss... these things have all changed me from when this blog was started back in the heady (ha) days of my youth.

As much as I would like to go back and edit 10 years of archives to provide an insight into the 'me' of now — to update coding snippets and revise website advice — it would probably take years to do so (by which point I'd have to start again!) This would defeat the point of keeping these archives anyway.

Please take these posts for what they are: a brief look into my past, my history, my journey.
